General Information

Plantation shutters are generally comprised of a shutter panel attached (hinged) to a frame. The panel itself consists of louvers, which rotate open and closed; stiles running vertically on the sides; and rails running horizontally on the top and bottom. Panels over 1200mm will include a divider rail, which adds strength and support to your shutter panels, and allows you to open the top louvers while keeping the bottom ones closed.

Window Shutters

Inside (Recessed) Mount Window Shutters

An Inside Mount fits within your window frame. It is a sleeker and normally the preferred way to install your window coverings, as long as you have enough depth. Available Inside Mount frame options are: Z Frame, Direct Mount , and L Frame.

It is very important to note that there are minimum depth requirements for the plantation shutters to fit flush with the wall (see chart below). If your window opening does not meet this minimum requirement then you must use an Outside Mount frame.

Plantation Shutters

Product Minimum Depth Req. for Inside Mount – Z Frame Minimum Depth Req. for Inside Mount – Direct Minimum Depth Req. for Inside Mount – L Frame
63mm blades 40mm 48mm 50mm
89mm blades 52mm 61mm 63mm
114mm blades 65mm 65mm 76mm

If installation occurs in a window opening with no protruding sill, an Inside Mount-Z Frame will extend approximately 18mm onto the face of the sheetrock/molding (see illustration A). However, if you have a protruding sill, the bottom of the shutter frame will stop at the top of the sill (illustration B). The decorative trim face of the Z Frame will cover most inconsistencies or light gaps due to out-of-square windows and will hide up to 18mm deviation per side.

IMPORTANT: Plantation Shutters are simple to measure, but accuracy is essential. You must use a steel measuring tape for accuracy. Measure all windows, even though they may appear to be identical.

Plantation Shutters

First, determine that there is a minimum of 40mm of clearance for Inside-Direct Mount and Inside-Trim Frames, or 50mm minimum clearance for an Inside-Recessed L Frame. Special attention should be given to window openings that have: sloped sills, window cranks, latches, security devices, removable screens, etc. because they may obstruct the shutter frame. When measuring for Inside Mount make sure that you have the proper clearance depth shown above based on your measurement to the front of the nearest obstruction.

WIDTH: Measure the width of the window opening in 3 places (top, middle, and bottom). Take the smallest of the 3 measurements and write it down. This is the width you will order. Do not make any deductions! The factory will make a small deduction from each for easy installation.

HEIGHT: Measure the window opening height in 3 places (left, middle, right) and take the smallest measurement. This is the height you will order. The factory will make a small deduction to the height measurement to provide easy installation.

Factory Adjustment

The factory will make all necessary deductions for inside mount for ease of installation.

Note: Window Shutters over 1200mm high will automatically include a centered divider rail.

How To Measure for Outside Mount Shutters

Outside(Wall) Mount Plantation Shutters

The Square Frame is used for Outside Mounts. Outside Mount installations are necessary when there is not at least 40mm of clearance within your window opening. The frame is installed on your wall, outside of the window opening. If your window has trim, attach the frame directly to your trim or first remove the trim and mount the frame to your wall. The Square Frame has a base dimension of 40mm and requires at least 40mm of a flat surface to mount. The mounting screws must be drilled into a secure surface such as wood, not drywall. Otherwise, use drywall bolts. If your window has molding of less than 25mm or has a dimensional surface, it is best to remove the molding.

IMPORTANT: Plantation Shutters are simple to measure but when measuring for your DIY Shutters accuracy is essential. You must use a steel measuring tape for accuracy. Measure all windows, even though they may appear to be identical.

Outside Mount shutters will come to you without any deduction from or additions to your ordered sizes. When ordering Outside Mount Do It Yourself shutters, be sure to specify finished sizes, including the frame.

WIDTH: When determining the finished width of your Window Shutters see diagram above.Make sure you measure to the outside edge of architrave.

HEIGHT: When measuring a window with no sill make sure you measure to the edge of the architrave, with a sill measure from top of sill to top edge of architrave.
